Feb. 4, 2026: Tomorrow night, we have the great honor of speaking to a sold-out audience as part of the Essex County Greenbelt Association’s Film & Lecture Series at Harbor Place in Haverhill. We’re very grateful for the invitation and very much looking forward to gathering with everyone for an evening focused on one of Essex County’s most remarkable winter wildlife events.
Each winter, the city of Lawrence hosts a massive communal crow roost, where thousands of crows gather at dusk after staging in smaller groups across the landscape. What begins with a few thousand birds in October typically builds to over 15,000 crows by late January and early February. The roost is composed mostly of American Crows, with a smaller but regular presence of Fish Crows, all converging nightly along the Merrimack River.
This roost is the most well-documented winter crow roosts in North America, thanks in large part to ongoing seasonal observations by the Crow Patrol. We’re always grateful for the opportunity to share what we’ve learned about these intelligent, social birds and the urban habitats they rely on.
Many thanks to Jane Rumrill, Events and Outreach Manager, and the Essex County Greenbelt Association. We’re looking forward to a great evening, and a great weekend of crow watching!
