Essex Art Center celebrates winter crow roost

LAWRENCE —The Essex Art Center will present exhibitions and programs around crows, exploring myths that portray them as tricksters, omens, and bringers of light, and celebrating the winter roost along the Merrimack River.

Opening reception for its three crow shows is Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The reception, at 56 Island St., Lawrence, celebrates American crows. Thousands of them descend on the city each winter, blanketing trees along the riverside at dusk. In January 2018, some 15,000 American crows, and a smaller number of fish crows, roosted on the banks of the Merrimack in Lawrence.

The Essex Art shows, “Celebrating the Winter Crow Roost,” “Murders and Other Flying Things” and “Community Responses to Crows,” will run from Jan. 11 through March 15.
